Month 5: Weeks 17-20

Week 17

Well, this week I was confounded when the power went off at work, and was off for 4 days. Talk about inefficiency. But now I am back at work and happy as a clam. My mother filled the house with the aroma of apple butter yesterday, which felt very much like a proper activity for a domestic little house with a pregnant woman in it. Probably because it has to do with food. At any rate, it was a very nice week. Mike is missing me properly, and while I'm enjoying having the huge bed all to myself, I miss him desperately too. He has managed to console himself with cheesecake, while I take refuge in the apple butter. We are cut from the same cloth, I think.

It's small, but it's very round. That wet spot on my belly is from me sticking my shirt in my mouth to look at my belly button. No, it's not just me being a slob like normal.

Week 18

Well, if it's not the power going out, it's something else. After I had been out of my office due to lack of electricity, I was kicked out of the media center because they needed to wax the floor for two days. Now that I'm back in my office they've decided to wax all the classrooms in my hall with what smells like mix of amonia and bleach. Very toxic. I had to dig out early on Friday to prevent myself from effectively dropping dead. It's not so bad now, but man, what a week. Mike spent the week up at Lake George, having a rolicking good time no doubt. I actually managed to make my mother come drawing with me on Sunday, but the model stunk. She seemed to think "nude" meant in a thong with lots of makeup and body jewelry. Bleah. But Mike comes home this week! Well, technically in week 19, but as my weeks revolve around tuesday, I'm getting very excited to see him this Thursday. Oh yeah, and about the baby. It kicks more than wiggles now, and I think maybe I felt it with my hand. I look forward to Mike being able to feel it move when he returns. My belly button, which used to be a little deep and kind of long, is round and shallow.

Just for reference, here's a before and after picture, one at week 5, the other today:

Week 19

Mike came home! He was delayed, naturally, but he arrived in one piece on the same day that my mom took off for the mainland on her vacation. The cats pretended not to be happy to see him, but Xebo rolled all over his dirty clothes like it was a dead fish. Happy cats.

Here he is at work with me today! The day after he arrived we went to our appointment and got to hear the baby's heartbeat for the first time. It was good and strong, not swishy at all. We're having another ultrasound scheduled to check for deformities and all that, at which point we've caved in and decided to find out the gender. It just seems silly to have the information presented to us and turn a blind eye to it. Besides, we already know it's a girl.

Week 20

Halfway there! Next I get to work on the page for month 6, amazing! My auntie took me to a fancy maternity shop to buy clothes, and Mike picked me up a few nice things in New York, so I can feel nice again instead of slugging around in cheap generic fat clothes (like what I'm wearing below). Funny, I never had the need to wear nice things until I couldn't. I'm happy, so far this second trimester stuff is a breeze.

These pictures are an example of why people think I'm so darn serious all the time. Unless I'm grinning like a fool I look like this - I'm smiling in both pictures! Anyway, today (Thursday July 18th) Mike felt the baby kick! It was very exciting, and I'm sure he'll write an entry about it in his section. We feel this interaction is a big step towards him being a dad, not just the bloke who's responsible for me being pregnant. Hee hee.
